Not Sure What You Can Tow? Start Here.

Start with these three numbers

1. Tow rating — the max weight your vehicle is rated to pull

2. Payload — what your vehicle can carry inside (people, gear, hitch weight)

3. GCWR — combined weight of your vehicle + everything it is towing

Most people only look at tow rating. Payload is the one that quietly limits you.

Rules of thumb

  • Stay around 80% of your tow rating once the RV is loaded
  • A travel trailer adds 10–15% of its weight to your hitch (and payload)
  • A fifth wheel adds 15–25% of its weight to your truck bed
